DE Gabe Cherry becomes Cal's first commit of 2017 class

Big defensive end Gabe Cherry of Centennial High (Bakersfield, CA) became Cal's first verbal commit of the 2017 class when he decided to pledge to the Golden Bears following a Junior Day visit on Saturday.

Cherry, who is 6'5" and 265 pounds, received his Cal offer three weeks ago. The Golden Bear staff was the first to pull the trigger, but Washington State and Utah soon followed suit.

Cherry, a Cal legacy, saw all he needed to see during Saturday's Elite Junior Day and will brings needed size, length and power to the line. Though he currently is rated as a strongside defensive end, his current size and frame could allow him to slide inside as a defensive tackle in college, fitting the mold that Fred Tate and Art Kaufman desire in their defensive tackles: tall, powerful, and mobile.

Last season, Cherry tallied 39 tackles, 8 TFL and 4 sacks for the Golden Hawks.

Rivals rates Cherry as a 3-star (5.6) prospect.
