Alec Hickman on Adidas Gauntlet in Dallas

OCCatholic.com

While Jemarl Baker was playing in New York City, his future Cal teammate Alec Hickman was playing in Dallas at an Adidas Gauntlet event. Hickman caught up with us and talked about his experience.

Hickman’s favorite part of the event was “playing against good competition and going against kids from all across the US.” He viewed this event as a chance to improve his game and grow as a player: “It helps me a lot with my confidence and skillset going against the best players in the country.”

Even though the stakes are raised in these events, Hickman says he approaches every game the same. “I take every game with the same amount of pressure, so no additional pressure. I feel like everyone is pretty good out here so no individuals [stand out]…just me and my team are the main stand outs.”

Like Jemarl Baker, Alec Hickman wasn’t focused on what other teams were doing. He was only focused on what his team was doing and what he could do to make his teammates better. In addition, he has great respect for all of his opponents and doesn’t want to take any opponent lightly.

For Alec, what makes AAU basketball great is the fact that everybody plays hard and is out there competing at a high level. “AAU style ball is a lot faster and way better competition overall. There is also much more intensity in AAU.”

For some, the intensity is something that they would shy away from. They would rather play against levels of competition that they can more easily dominate and control. Hickman is not one of those players. He relishes the chance to compete with the very best and wants his opponents to challenge him as much as possible.

In addition to playing against high-level competition, he got a chance to enjoy some of the great things that Dallas has to offer…namely its food. “The thing I liked most about Dallas was the barbeque food. This was my first time in Dallas, also.”

Alec Hickman had a great time in Dallas. He played against high-level competition, improved his game, and enjoyed some good food. Can you think of a better way to spend a weekend?
