ARC LB Jordan Kunaszyk commits to Cal

Cal bolstered their linebacker corps in a big way on Thursday when American River College linebacker Jordan Kunaszyk announced his commitment and intent to sign with the Golden Bears.

Ultimately, the 6'3", 230 pound Kunaszyk picked Cal over Colorado, though he held six additional scholarship offers from the likes of Iowa State, UNLV, Southern Miss and more. He took his official visit to Berkeley last week. During that trip, he spent time with the staff and had the opportunity to observe Friday's spring practice, something which proved integral to his comfort level with pledging to the Bears.

Kunaszyk's commitment gives the Bears a second linebacker signee for the 2016 class to go with Texas OLB Cameron Goode, though Kunaszyk is expected to come in and compete for playing time immediately. He will enroll this summer after completing his final semester at ARC. The addition is timely, with Cal losing four linebackers to graduation and two expected contributors, Devante Downs and Hamilton Anoa'i, recovering from off-season surgeries. Despite Art Kaufman often times employing a base nickel and only trotting two linebackers onto the field, quality depth, especially to spell leading tackler Hardy Nickerson, is critical.

Kunaszyk will most likely compete at Mike, with three years to play three. Last season at ARC, he earned CCCAA All-American honors and was named the Nor-Cal Conference Defensive MVP for the Beavers after tallying 118 tackles, 3 sacks and 7.5 TFL.

He is a hard-nosed, intelligent backer that shows good recognition and reaction speed. He's physical in contact and relentless in pursuit. His size and strength position him well to contribute sooner than later.

This isn't the first time Cal has made a late addition to a recruiting class. That said, with eight scholarship offers and an impressive resume, it's not hard to recognize that Jordan Kunaszyk may be the most impressive late cycle addition under this staff.
